Happy Bird Concept
Flocks with less than 250 laying hens are often entitled as non-professional, small-scale farmers. In the Happy Bird Concept, for example, mostly these hen caravans can be found on organic (dairy) farms that like to keep them as a side-activity. This way of keeping hens is far from non-professional. The farmers, for example, fulfill all legal requirements concerning health risks (no free-range with AI-alerts), food safety matters, such as salmonella and dioxin, and the hen’s welfare, such as free-range, enrichment and raising the male-brothers.
Fair Poultry uses Chicken Compass two times per year for monitoring the welfare of these flocks. Results often demonstrate risk-factors that can help providing practical solutions on how to improve or safeguard the hen’s welfare.
