In recent years the number of backyard poultry has increased, which means that the chance that a companion animal veterinarian will encounter a chicken during consultation hours is increasing. Hobbyists find it more logical to take a sick chicken to the small animal vet than to a farm animal vet, where poultry is traditionally treated. However, poultry medicine is not sufficiently part of veterinary training, as a result of which many small animal veterinarians do not provide the right treatment.
