In recent years the number of backyard poultry has increased, which means that the chance that a companion animal veterinarian will encounter a chicken during consultation hours is increasing. Hobbyists find it more logical to take a sick chicken to the small animal vet than to a farm animal vet, where poultry is traditionally treated.
